Renting a Car in St. Thomas

A valid US driving license allows you to drive a rental car in St. Thomas for up to 90 days provided you are age 25 or over. Some rental agencies will make an exception for renters age 21-24 for an additional fee. Rentals are available to non-US citizens with a valid license.  If you are staying longer than 90 days, you must get a USVI license.

All vehicles have US style steering wheels on the left rather than the right. Drive on the left, look out for one way streets, there are no right turns when lights are red, but left turns at red lights are allowed if the road is clear.

Taxis and Ferrys in St. Thomas

Taxis are normally available at the cruise ship docks, airport and downtown Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. Be sure to discuss the taxi rate prior to boarding to avoid later confusion.

Hourly ferry service (a 20-minute ride) from Red Hook, St. Thomas is available to St. John and operates from 6:30 a.m., then on the hour from 7:00 am - midnight. Ferry service from St. John to St. Thomas runs on the hour from 6:00 a.m - 11:00 p.m. Less frequent ferries travel between Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas and St. John (a 45-minute ride).
